Dimetrodon and Pterodactyl

Since it’s been so long since I last posted, I decided to make this one a double. The Dimetrodon applique is one that I made in my dinosaur blanket, and it’s super easy, as well as super cute.

Dimetrodon:

Ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring, ch 2 (counts as first dc) and 15 dc in ring (16 total), join with a sl st to first ch 2.

Head: ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in each of the next 2 chs. Ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook. Dc in next bottom ch, hdc in next 4 chs, dc in last ch. Sk the next dc on center round, and sl st in next dc. Turn and sl st in first dc and hdc of neck, ch 1, turn.

Spiny Back: dc in same dc as joining, ch1, dc in next center circle dc, ch1, htc in same st, ch 1, tc in next st, ch1, dtc (double triple crochet) in same st, ch1, tc in same st, ch 1, htc in next st, ch1, dc in same st, ch 1, dc in next st, ch1, hdc in next st, ch 8, turn.

Tail and legs: sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st again in next ch, sc in next 2 ch, hdc in next 3 ch, dc twice in the last hdc of the spiny back, sk one dc of center circle, join with a sl st to next dc. Sl st into next 2 dc, *ch 5, dc into 3rd ch from hook and next ch, sk one dc on center circle, join with a sl st to next dc. rep from *, bind off, leaving a tail.

I forgot to leave a long tail for sewing it on, so my picture is tail-less.

Pterodactyl:

ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring. ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st to 1st ch 2.

Head: ch 7, sl st into 2nd ch from hook and next 2 ch. Ch 6, sl st into 2nd ch from hook and next ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next 2 ch, dc in the space where the “ear” of the pterodactyl is, hdc in next 4 ch. Skip one dc on center circle and join with a sl st to next dc. Sl st into next 2 dc.

1st Wing: ch 7, sl st in 2nd ch from hook (picot made), ch 6. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next 2 ch, dc in next 4 chs (including the space where the picot was made), htc in next 2 chs, tc in last ch, skip 2 dc on center circle, join with a sl to next dc, sl st into next st.

Tail: ch 9, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next ch, sc in next 2 ch, hdc in next 4 chs, sk next dc on center circle, join with a sl st to next dc, sl st into next dc.

2nd Wing: ch 12, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next 2 ch, dc in next 2 ch.  ch 3, join with a sl st into 3rd ch (picot made) dc in next 2 ch, htc in next 2 ch, tc in last ch, sk 2 dc on center circle, join to next dc with a sl st, fasten off.

again, I forgot to leave a sewing tail for this little guy. oops!

more dinosaurs soon to come!

  1. I’m currently working on a dinosaur blanket and came across your pattern, thank you so much for sharing. It’s so clever!

  2. Hi – I’m new to crocheting so this is probably a daft question but you talk about HDC (half double?) and HTC (half tripple?) but I’ve looked and looked online and these appear to be the same stitch, just UK and US terminology. Could you clarify what a HTC is for me please? (Told you it was a stupid question!!). Many thanks

  3. Sorry, should have read half treble not half tripple!
